OBJECT OF THE MONTH

Wooden Tik, Torah case, 19th century, from Beth Shalom Synagogue, Athens.

June, 2023

The gesso-covered and olive green painted Tik with reddish-brown, stepped cornice dating to the 19th century was recovered at the Beth Shalom Synagogue in Athens, but its origin is unknown. The facets of the body are decorated alternately with symmetrically arranged, naturalistic bouquets of hyacinths, tulips, roses or almond blossoms; this design is reminiscent of Ottoman folk design of the 18th century. The two panels bordering the front opening provide a refreshing sight of sliced water melons, revealing the red pulp and black seeds.
