DIGITAL APPLICATIONS

The Jews of Greece: 2.300 Years of History and Tradition

In 2018, the Museum launched a digital multimedia application entitled “The Jews of Greece: 2.300 Years of History and Tradition”, which was supported by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Athens and edited by archaeologist and JMG researcher Ms. Anastasia Loudarou.

The interactive app features archival material and presents the history of Greek Jews from Late Antiquity until the 21st century. It contains historical and archaeological information about the religious traditions and everyday life of the Greek Jews, as well as their presence in the political, social and cultural life of the country. It also refers to the persecution of Greek Jews during the WWII and traces the local history of the Jewish communities throughout Greece.

It includes folklore and ethnographic references, literary extracts, rare photographs, oral testimonies and other audiovisual material. The content was mainly drawn from the JMG Collections, Library, Photographic Archive and Oral History Archive, while some of it was kindly provided by private individuals.

The processing of the material began in 2007 by the archaeologist-JMG researcher Anastasia Loudarou and in the following years Dr. Eleni Beze and Dora Kechagia undertook the philological editing and the aesthetic enrichment of the material included in the application. The platform was designed in such a way that it can be used by teachers, students and researchers. The bilingual (English and Greek) application is the result of years of interdisciplinary research, within the context of outreach and interactivity, which are always at the heart of the JMG mission.

The application runs on Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10 operating systems without any additional programs. Download the application from the button below, unzip it and run the .exe file. You will need to wait 10-20 seconds for the application to start. If you have an antivirus program, it might block the execution of the application. You can add it to the secure execution applications and open it.
