On Wednesday, 4 June 2025, the opening of the new temporary exhibition of the Jewish Museum of Greece “Like Hounded Birds: Greek Jews after WWII” took place.

The exhibition, which focuses on Greek Jews in the period following the Second World War, is the first of its kind to be presented in Greece and its opening attracted many people interested in its subject.

The event was welcomed by the director of the JMG, Zanet Battinou, who spoke about the importance of presenting such an exhibition and its place in the context of the JMG’s research work. This was followed by a short speech by the exhibition’s sponsor Nissim Migionis who expressed his pride in having his name associated with this important effort.

Raphael Moisis, who lent original material to the exhibition, then shared with the attendees thoughts of his father, Asher Moisis, as well as his own, connecting the past and present of this effort.

The JMG president, Mikis Modiano, then took the floor, who in turn stressed the value of the exhibition and the accompanying publication, and thanked both the curator of the exhibition, Dr. Eleni Beze, and the entire staff of the museum.

Lastly, Dr. Beze spoke about the research process and how she gathered the material and the contents of the exhibition. Some of the themes addressed by Dr. Eleni Beze’s research include the experiences of camp survivors and Jewish resistance fighters during the Civil War and in the post-Civil War years and the dilemmas the survivors faced, such as living in the diaspora or emigrating primarily to Israel.

In closing, the director thanked the attendees and informed them that they would soon receive notice of scheduled tours of the new temporary exhibition.

The exhibition includes: rich photographic material, documents, first editions, religious artifacts, press releases, video interviews of survivors, film clips of the era, etc. The exhibition is addressed to the general Greek and international Jewish and non-Jewish public, schoolchildren, and students. In addition to reading short texts, the public will have the opportunity to see excerpts from interviews with survivors and videos of their daily life after the war, as well as newsreels of the post-war era that depict the emigration and internment of Greek Jews in refugee camps.
