This presentation offers an introduction to the unique Jewish community of Corfu, a community that flourished at the crossroads of East and West and shared in the island’s rich and layered history. The narrow cantons, combined with the coexistence of diverse populations speaking different languages, practicing different religions, and embracing different cultures, shaped the daily life and traditions of the Jewish community. These influences gave rise to distinct customs, practices, and traditions that left their mark on Corfu’s cultural, functional, and architectural heritage—traces of which can still be observed today.
This is an opportunity to explore an authentic aspect of Corfu’s history through the lives of its Jewish people. Despite facing anti-Semitism as early as the 19th century and enduring unimaginable brutality during the Second World War and the Holocaust, the Corfiot Jewish community perseveres. Today, its members continue to live on the island with a deep love for their homeland, expressed through their unique accent, vibrant temperament, and enduring spirit. This presentation invites you on a journey of discovery—an exploration through historical images, flavors of the past, the sounds and colors of the present, and the hopes of a brighter future.
