“My Old Neighbourhood”: Jewish Neighbourhoods of Greece

This presentation explores aspects of life in the Jewish neighbourhoods of Greece, particularly before the Second World War. Its aim is not to uncover groundbreaking or shocking conclusions, but to give voice to people from across Greece as they share their memories of the neighbourhoods they lived in as children or young adults, both before and after the war.

Through the words of those who experienced it firsthand, the presentation brings to life their homes, daily routines, celebrations, games, gatherings, and relationships with family, friends, and neighbours. It also delves into the profound changes brought by the war. These narratives are enriched with photographs and testimonies, sourced from the twelve Greek Jewish communities for which archival and photographic material is available.

However, the passage of time has inevitably led to the loss of valuable testimonies, leaving gaps in the historical record. For some communities, once vibrant with pre-war activity, only fragments remain. Additionally, the fact that wealthier individuals were more likely to survive the Holocaust often skews the picture, leaving the lives of the less affluent majority—who formed the backbone of many communities—less documented.

This presentation invites today’s audience to connect with timeless, universal human stories while immersing themselves in a vibrant, though incomplete, portrayal of a way of life once rich in traditions and relationships, a world irrevocably shattered by war. It also encourages reflection on the transformations brought about by modern life and inspires viewers to critically and creatively appreciate their own neighbourhoods.
