Participation of the JMG at the seminar “The Holocaust as a Starting Point: Bulgaria-Greece-North Macedonia” in Sofia

Dr. Maria Vasilikou, historian and researcher at the Jewish Museum of Greece, participated in a seminar for educators held in Sofia (February 28-March 2, 2023). The seminar, entitled “The Holocaust as a Starting Point: Bulgaria-Greece-North Macedonia,” was organized by the Mémorial de la Shoah, the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, the Jewish Museum of Greece, the Holocaust Memorial Center-Skopje, and the Bulgarian History Teachers’ Association. Forty teachers from primary and secondary education in all three countries attended lectures by academics and participated in workshops aimed at shedding light on the history of the Holocaust in the Balkans, issues of memory and remembrance, and the need for vigilance against the danger of anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial and/or distortion. The seminar was conducted in English and Bulgarian, and thanks to the availability of automatic translation, communication between participants was seamless. Ms. Vasilikou’s workshop was entitled “The use of primary sources when teaching the Holocaust in the Bulgarian occupation zone in Greece (1942-1943)”.
