“The Jewish Community of Ioannina – A Journey Through Time”: Opening at the Gallery of the Municipality of Papagos – Cholargos.
In the framework of the cultural cooperation between the Municipality of Ioannina and the Municipality of Papagos – Cholargos and under the auspices of the Presidency of the Parliament, the two-day tribute to the city of Ioannina “Cultural Routes: from the Municipality of Papagos – Cholargos to Ioannina and Epirus” was organized.
As part of the events, on Saturday, October 15, 2022, the exhibition of the Jewish Museum of Greece entitled “The Jewish Community of Ioannina. A Journey through Time” was ingurated at the Gallery of the Municipality of Papagos – Cholargos. Romaniote songs and music were presented by the ensemble of Sakis Negrin, with soloist Marko Battino, and the documentary “Romaniotes, the Greek Jews of Ioannina” was screened, directed by Anies Sklavos – Stelios Tatakis.
In his address, the President of the Parliament, Konstantinos Tasoulas, referred to the historical course of the city of Ioannina and praised the cultural cooperation between the Municipalities of Ioannina and Papagos – Cholargos, which he personally supported with great enthusiasm.
The Mayor of Ioannina, Moses Elisaf, thanked everyone for the initiative and the signing of the memorandum of cooperation, the fruit of which was the two-day events.
The Mayor of Papagos – Cholargos, Elias Apostolopoulos, in his address, thanked the President of the Parliament for the honour of putting the two-day events under his auspices. He also thanked Mr. Elisaf for this cooperation, through which the vision and expectation of the two municipalities is to open a road of friendship and communication between citizens through culture.
The president of the JMG, Samuel (Makis) Matsas, congratulated the organisers of the two-day event and referred to the emotion that such events cause him, because of his Romaniote origin.
Afterwards, Zanet Battinou, director of JMG, gave a brief introduction to the theme and contents of the temporary exhibition “The Jewish Community of Ioannina. A Journey through Time”. See her speech here (in Greek).
The JMG’s exhibition remained in the Municipal Gallery until 15 November 2022, giving the public the opportunity to visit it.
The events were organized on the initiative of the volunteer of the Municipality of Papagos – Cholargos, Katerina Dalagiorgos, with the contribution of the Jewish Museum of Greece, the Brotherhood of Epirus of Nea Makri – Marathon – Rafina, the Jewish Community of Ioannina and the Cultural Centre of the Municipality of Ioannina.
